Trauma & PTSD

Trauma reshapes how we see ourselves and the world. In a safe, structured, and judgment-free environment, we use trauma-informed approaches to help you process difficult experiences and reclaim your sense of safety and agency.

What trauma does to the mind and body

Trauma is not just a memory — it's a physiological response that reshapes how your nervous system perceives threat, safety, and connection. After a traumatic experience, your brain and body may remain on high alert long after the danger has passed, leading to flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, emotional numbness, or intense reactions to ordinary triggers.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a clinical condition that can develop after exposure to actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence — whether experienced directly, witnessed, or learned about in the context of a loved one.

Trauma-informed psychiatric care

At Mental Health Abounds, trauma-informed care is not a technique — it is the foundation of everything we do. We understand that past experiences of harm, betrayal, or loss affect how you relate to care providers, authority, and the concept of safety itself.

Our approach is paced by you. We will never push you to revisit painful experiences before you are ready. Every step of treatment is explained, consented to, and adjusted based on your comfort and capacity.

Treatment and support

Psychiatric care for trauma and PTSD may include medication to reduce the intensity of intrusive symptoms, improve sleep, and stabilize mood — allowing you the neurological headspace to engage in therapeutic work. We coordinate with trauma-focused therapists when indicated and provide supportive therapy as part of your integrated psychiatric care.

Healing from trauma is not about forgetting what happened — it's about no longer being controlled by it. We are committed to helping you reclaim your sense of safety, agency, and self.
